What's your logo?

Over the last week I have shared my emerging website with a few chums to help me sense check the content, layout and flow before I put a note on Facebook and share wider.

My work chum Andy was a bit bemused by the logo next to the title of the website "What's that supposed to be?" he asked, "Isn't that obvious" I replied, "It's a collaged seagull with a hat and scarf on".  "Flying about on the east coast can be mighty cold you know so you've got to wrap up warm" I added.  "Oh" he replied.

I asked my brother Jamie what he thought the image was later that evening, seeing as it had bemused Andy.  "When I first looked at it I thought it was a dragon fly and then when I looked closer I could see it was one of the bird images that you put on the back of your cards".  "Did it bother you that the image wasn't readily apparent?" I followed up with.  "Not at all - when you look close you can see what it is".

I guess this is something that is true of much of my work.  When I took part in Art on the Street back in May, one visitor to my stand spent ages looking at my Regatta Rowers picture and when I pointed out some of the component parts he was suprised that he had missed them at first glance.  "That's really clever he said - you've got to look close as it's not what you think it's made of is it?".  Exactly.   Life is very much in the details and sometimes we need to pause and really look to 'see'.

In case the seagull logo has caused you to question your eyes or think "what on earth is that supposed to be?" here's a bigger version:

Hello and welcome to my website - and a new blog function!

Last year I set up a blog at Blogspot and then kind of bottled out of writing anything.  In January I made a post about Christening 2011 the "Year of Craft" and promised to write regular updates on all my 'arting and crafting' adventures through the year.   It's now November and although I have had a lot of fun this year and created some things that I would love to share, the pictures are still on my hard drive and the step-by-step instructions are still in my head . . .

Maybe creating this new site for my work will be just the catalyst I need to 'extract a digit' and get on with this - and fingers crossed for a facility to enable me to post my 2011 entries retrospectively too!

The photo below is me standing in my studio (my kitchen) holding my Crafting Manifesto for 2011, listing all the things I wanted to try.  I have ticked some off the list, but, as always, I have been a bit over ambitious with my plans and will be carrying some over to 2012.

As we are fast approaching the end of the year, why not pause for a mo, put your thinking cap on too and consider what 'arting and crafting adventures' you want to take yourself on next year as well and join me?  Maybe a bit of peer pressure and polite remindering is just what I need!
