Marlow Art and Crafts Society 'Jubilee Exhibition'

29/3/2012

I've taken a break from 'paper and glue' over the last week as have been busy getting things in place on the admin front for the Marlow Art and Crafts Society Jubilee Exhibition that will run from the 2 - 10 June 2012.

I have a few jobs on the Committee including producing the the quarterly Newsletter and publicity materials for our exhibitions. None of this of itself is a big job, but it always seems to fall at a time when I'm really busy at work!

This year we are going to try some different ways to publicise the event and I have been given 'free reign' to produce some postcards.  Our 'brand' is a fab logo designed by Pat Begley and a very bright sunshine yellow - which can be a bit of a challenge to weave other elements into.

Seeing as it's the Jubilee and there still seems to be an appetite for 'Keep Calm and Carry On' motifs, I've designed the following . . .  Just hope it isn't too 'trendy' for the Society!

If you would like to have some postcards to help spread the word please let me know!

How to Guide 3 and getting your adhesion strategy right

11/3/2012

I've just loaded up a third 'How to Guide' that will guide you step-by-step to make the lovely 'Edwardian Beauty' card featured below this post.

One thing you soon learn with mixed media arting and crafting is that you have to get your 'adhesion strategy' just right or your fabulous creation will just fall to bits. When I first moved into this style of work I actually produced some 'test pictures' that were framed and hung on the wall in my kitchen over a radiator for a year - when nothing peeled or fell off I knew my adhesion strategy worked and then made another set of pictures for exhibition (I'm thinking of showing a couple of these 'test works' as part of my Bucks Open Studios offering in the Summer).

Adhering petticoat netting to paper is one those combinations that always proves to be a bit tricky on the glue front, well at least for me.  If the net can be stitched into place that is much easier, but when creating this card I couldn't face getting my sewing machine out for such a small line of stitching . . . now just think, if I had a bigger kitchen table I could have my sewing machine out all the time - imagine the 'adhesion' possibilities then - lol!

Make and Take day fun!

I had a great time on Saturday taking part in the 'Make and Masterpiece' event at Emerald Framing - although I must say after being on my feet from 10 am to 5 pm I was mightly glad to get home and put my feet up on the sofa!

We had a steady flow of people through the morning and then after lunch there was a bit of a rush and at one point I was helping four little people to make cards at the same time!

I managed to take a few pictures and I'm sure you will agree that the children (aged 7 to 10) produced some really beautiful cards that they should be really proud of (and all of them went home with all their fingers and thumbs intact).

Julia Hayward had some glass shapes that could be embellished with coloured pieces of glass that once heated would fuse together to create gorgeous art pieces that you could hang in a window.  I had a go at creating a tiny seascape with a boat and can't wait to see what it comes out like once heated. You can see more of her lovely work at:

www.juliahaywardglass.com

Teresa Mills had a vast selection of wooden letters and other shapes to mosaic - and the most popular had to be the chicken! We also learnt a lot from Teresa about laser cutting . . . !  You can see some of Teresa's detailed mosaic work in the background of some of the photos below and at:

I have never taken part in anything like this before so it was a real learning experience - would I do it again? You bet!

Second 'How to Guide' on website

I'm pleased to announce the addition of a second 'How to Guide' on my website that will show you step-by-step how to create a pretty 'bunting' easel card pictured below. This card has been designed for the Make and Take at Emerald Framing this Saturday.

This is a really versatile project and one that can easily be adapted in a number of simple ways to change the look and feel of the card completely. I'll be adding some 'variation on a theme' ideas on my cards page in due course.

Please take a look, or even better have a go - I think you may be surprised what you can create with a few materials and a little time. After all, what could be prettier than some cheery bunting sitting on your craft table?
