Our annual exhibition is now in full swing.

The Chairman's Reception on Saturday evening was well attended and we had some lovely comments from visitors about the range and quality of the work.

As a Committee Member who helps with the set up of the exhibition, it is always exciting as you never know what subjects our members have been painting over the previous year - and what they will bring with them!

This makes curating the exhibition a bit of a challenge at times - but it also a delight as we get to see how peoples style and techniques have developed over the year.

June - MACS Annual Exhibition

Marlow Art and Crafts Society held their Annual Exhibition at the Church Hall in Marlow from the 25 May to the 2 June.

We set up on the Friday evening and it is always exciting to see the new work of our members - and that of guest exhibitors as it comes through the door.  One of the great things about MACS is that anyone in the club can enter work, whether they having been doing art for a year - or many years and it is great to see peoples work styles an confidence grow year on year. The pictures get moved around a bit as new ones arrive - but the finished result is always a balanced display.

This year we had to erect more screens to accommodate all of the work which was great!

I exhibited a couple of Henley Royal Regatta pictures.  One of which, the Thames Challenge Cup was awarded the runner up prize for the 'favourite picture' as voted for by visitors to the exhibition which was a real honour.

June - Bucks Open Studios at Emerald

I took a couple of days' off of work to help Cath with the set up of Bucks Open Studios at Emerald Framing and Gallery.  When I arrived Cath was looking at the state of some of the walls and in a mad moment we decided that we just had to paint them before we displayed all the lovely work.

After a quick trip back to Marlow to pick up paint and my trusty painting gear we set to work - and what a difference a fresh coat of paint made - the works just shone!

Talking of differences, this year I asked Cath to professionally frame my pictures and was blown away with with the results - this was the first time I had seen my new work mounted and framed - no going back to Ikea frames now . . .

Note: Cath kindly reframed the others for me so they all look the same now!

May - Collective Art in Marlow

The 17 - 19 May marked the first Collective Art in Marlow event of the year.  I was really happy to be invited to take part again and spent a lovely weekend at the Pugin Rooms with some fabulous artists and makers.

At this event we held four workshop sessions giving visitors a chance to try their hands at working with glass, copper, mosaic and felt.

May - Frogmoor Paper Mill

On the 20 May Marlow Art and Crafts Society held a trip to Frogmoor Paper Mill in Hemel Hempstead.  The mill is located next to the River Gade which connects to the canal system - once providing a 'speedy' transport link to get the paper to London for the print industry.

We had a tour of the paper mill - and to see paper being produced from a watery slush of fibres was just fascinating.  After a lunch of fish and chips we had a short boat trip on the River Gade.

This was well worth taking a day off work for!

Marlow Art and Crafts Society: Denise Allen

Picture of Denise Allen and members of Marlow Art and Crafts Society discussing her picture in the tea break
Asking Denise questions in the tea break.
Entry from 1 November

Our society had a real treat this month - a demonstration evening with Denise Allen.  The title on our programme was intriguing: watercolour deconstruction and reconstruction and if I am honest, I’m not sure that any of us could have quite imagined what this was going to mean in practice!

Denise has been a professional artist since 1989 and belongs to a watercolour group with other professional artists. It was at one of these meetings a few years’ back when she watched one of the artists rip up finished pictures and then reuse sections in a new work. Denise found the architectural bits that the lady was going to throw away much more interesting and it planted a seed of thought that has blossomed into the technique she shared with us.

Denise rightly said that most of us probably have a drawer full of paintings with bits that we like on them, paintings that are too good to throw away, but not good enough to frame (lot’s of nodding in agreement in the room at this point!). The technique she went on to share allowed you to reuse the sections that you like and create something new.

Denise pulled three paintings out from her bag, watercolours of St Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge and a tree lined bank on the Thames all painted in situ – she then proceeded to rip them up in front of us. There were audible gasps from some members at this point!  This is where the ‘deconstruction’ comes in.  Denise then went on the affix the strips of pictures onto a sheet of Bockingford watercolour paper to produce a new composition – the ‘reconstruction’ part.

Our eyes and brains are clever things and it was clear that even though the elements from the three original pictures were collaged on the new page, you could start to make visual links between the strips of paper and begin to fill the gaps in.  It didn’t matter that the scale and perspective and light directions were mixed up which was surprising.

Once Denise had found a composition that worked, she started drawing back onto the page using a graphite stick to start connecting the elements back together. Then the fun began – filling the gaps using watercolour. Some of the white edges of the torn collaged sections were left white and others were painted over. Denise uses a Korean paint that I sadly can’t remember the name of.  Her palette is limited: ultramarine, cobalt blue hue, Pthalo blue, sepia, burnt umber, yellow ochre, lemon yellow and a fab new one to me, a very pretty 'opera rose' pink!

Denise encouraged us to be sparing with the paint application and to leave white paper sparkles or ‘windows of gloriousness’ in our works as it really enlivens the finished work.

The finished piece is one of those works that you can not simply give a passing glance. It was a picture in which you saw new things each time you looked – a clear story of place permeates through the work.  Denise said that it is also like looking at an image through broken glass which is a good analogy.

I found Denise’s approach fascinating as it struck a chord with the way that I work in my collages. I ‘deconstruct’ a scene to its component parts and then ‘reconstruct’ it back together using different media to represent different elements and like to use bits from more than one image to create a new composition.  Isn’t it great that taking the same ‘deconstruct’ and ‘reconstruct’ ideas that artistically you can end up with completely different outcomes?

The following photos were taken with the kind permission of Denise (on the condition that she could have copies too which I have done!)

You can see more of Denise’ work and find out about the painting holidays that she runs in Minorca on her website:

Jubilee Exhibition

Popped down to our exhibition yesterday to replenish my greeting card stock and had a LOVELY surprise - someone had bought both of my original artworks!

My chums Val and Maureen were stewarding on Tuesday and Val told me that a group of four people came in who were passing through on a boating holiday. They were moored down in Higginson Park and saw the sign for the exhibition and wandered in. The gentleman who bought the works said he never expected to be heading back to his boat with two pictures - but had never seen anything quite like them before! (as he handed over a cheque I take that to be in a good way).

I took a few pictures while I was stewarding on Saturday and share these below.

The exhibition runs up to 5.30pm on Sunday 10 June so there is still time to pop in  . . .

Jubilee Exhibition all ready to go!

My feet ache - what a day!

We have all been busy down at the Church Hall setting up our Jubilee Exhibition.  I'm delighted to report that we had to put up more screens as we had so much work submitted. This is an open exhibition and we have some guest exhibitors showing work alongside club members which always makes for an interesting mix of work for visitors.  I have my eye on one picture in particular and will be taking my cheque book along when I steward tomorrow . . !

We introduced a new category this year for 'first time exhibitors' and have six entrants which is really encouraging for all of us - and it's not everyday you get your work shown in the same show as an RA Summer Exhibition exhibitor too!

I've put in two collage works based on Marlow Regatta - the picture below is me in my brothers garden sharing one work in its unmounted form. I'll update my gallery section in due course with these so you can see the finished works in their framed glory (along with the five Henley Royal Regatta works for Bucks Open Studio's - it's been a really busy arty week).

I love this picture as have used the faces of Ben's nephews and chums in place of the rowers in my original photo and it really makes me laugh to see their grinning faces looking out at the girls on the riverbank.  I've taken step-by-step photos and will share some of these in future posts.

Hope to see you in Marlow for our show.

Marlow Art and Crafts Society 'Jubilee Exhibition'

I've taken a break from 'paper and glue' over the last week as have been busy getting things in place on the admin front for the Marlow Art and Crafts Society Jubilee Exhibition that will run from the 2 - 10 June 2012.

I have a few jobs on the Committee including producing the the quarterly Newsletter and publicity materials for our exhibitions. None of this of itself is a big job, but it always seems to fall at a time when I'm really busy at work!

This year we are going to try some different ways to publicise the event and I have been given 'free reign' to produce some postcards.  Our 'brand' is a fab logo designed by Pat Begley and a very bright sunshine yellow - which can be a bit of a challenge to weave other elements into.

Seeing as it's the Jubilee and there still seems to be an appetite for 'Keep Calm and Carry On' motifs, I've designed the following . . .  Just hope it isn't too 'trendy' for the Society!

If you would like to have some postcards to help spread the word please let me know!
