May and June are my busiest months for exhibitions and this weekend I've been putting the finishing touches to some more new work for Bucks Open Studios.

Working from my kitchen table in my small house means that for practical reasons I can not open up my home to visitors - and so am very grateful to have been invited to be one of eleven 'Emerald Artists'  showing work at Emerald Framing and Gallery in Chalfont St Peter.

If you find yourself in the area do pop in - you will be in for a visual treat and each weekend from 10.30am - 3.30pm there is a series of workshops and demonstrations planned for you to get involved with:

Saturday 7 June

Ruby Sharp: ceramics - come and throw a pot!

Sunday 8 June
Hazel Williams: laser cut artist - pop in and make a masterpiece

Saturday 14 June
Teresa Mills: mosaic - our ever popular mosaic make and take day

Sunday 15 June
Julia Hayward: glass - glass make and take day

Saturday 21 June
Nigel Sims: printmaker - printmaking demonstation

Sunday 22 June
Oenone Randall: copper - copper make and take day

June - MACS Annual Exhibition

Marlow Art and Crafts Society held their Annual Exhibition at the Church Hall in Marlow from the 25 May to the 2 June.

We set up on the Friday evening and it is always exciting to see the new work of our members - and that of guest exhibitors as it comes through the door.  One of the great things about MACS is that anyone in the club can enter work, whether they having been doing art for a year - or many years and it is great to see peoples work styles an confidence grow year on year. The pictures get moved around a bit as new ones arrive - but the finished result is always a balanced display.

This year we had to erect more screens to accommodate all of the work which was great!

I exhibited a couple of Henley Royal Regatta pictures.  One of which, the Thames Challenge Cup was awarded the runner up prize for the 'favourite picture' as voted for by visitors to the exhibition which was a real honour.

June - Bucks Open Studios at Emerald

I took a couple of days' off of work to help Cath with the set up of Bucks Open Studios at Emerald Framing and Gallery.  When I arrived Cath was looking at the state of some of the walls and in a mad moment we decided that we just had to paint them before we displayed all the lovely work.

After a quick trip back to Marlow to pick up paint and my trusty painting gear we set to work - and what a difference a fresh coat of paint made - the works just shone!

Talking of differences, this year I asked Cath to professionally frame my pictures and was blown away with with the results - this was the first time I had seen my new work mounted and framed - no going back to Ikea frames now . . .

Note: Cath kindly reframed the others for me so they all look the same now!

Bucks Open Studio - demonstration day

This is a belated entry from the 17 June. I have had PC issues this week and sadly missed the boat to share this in 'real time' as Bucks Open Studios finished today.

17 June 2012

I spent today with Cath over at Emerald Gallery - along with a Smart car full of my mixed media 'treasures' to share with visitors so that they could better understand how I go about producing my pictures.

I've mentioned before that I like to take step-by-step photos when I work and decided to nip in to Jessops in the week and get a set printed so that I could display them on A2 size foam boards.
Being an 'open studio' event I also printed some pictures of my studio space (my kitchen) to show that you don't need to wait until you have a 'studio' to be creative.  It also showed that when I work  I use the cats scratching post platform as an extra work surface!

The photo below shows some of the items that I brought along - plus, if you look closely, the fab biscuits that Cath provided along with lots of cups of tea to keep my crafting energies up!

We had a steady flow of visitors and it was great to meet and chat people about what I do. It was really lovely that some of my chums from Marlow Art and Crafts Society popped in (Wilma and Alan and Janet and Joe) to give their support too - thank you it meant a lot.

At the end of the day I dropped Cath off home, but not before a short break in the journey to take a look at some very fine fellows!

Taking part in Bucks Open Studios has been a really positive experience and I have met some lovely artist / makers as a result. It has reinforced in me that making things makes me happy and it has really encouraged me to try and work out a schedule so that I can do more.

Bucks Open Studio - setting up

After all of the excitement yesterday morning learning that my pictures had sold from the Marlow Exhibition, I had a fabulous afternoon helping Cath over at Emerald Gallery to get ready for Bucks Open Studio - the private viewing of which takes place this evening!

I say 'helping' in the loosest of terms. I learnt that I am 'not yet competent' at putting hooks in the right place and should not be left alone with a hammer as tried to knock a nail through a brass fitting which was never going to happen! Cath on the other hand was more than 'competent' and by the time I left, all the pictures were hung in collections 'by artist' and looked great.

I don't want to steal Cath's thunder on the picture front so will just share one shot here - as I'm sure not many of us will have seen the gallery space in this 'minimalist' state before . . .

Looking forward to meeting the other artists this evening over a glass of wine - and wish everyone a successful show!

Bucks Open Studios

I'm really excited to share that I am going to take part in Bucks Open Studios this year, as part of a collective of contemporary artists exhibiting at Cath's Emerald Framing and Gallery - the Emerald Artists (pause to pinch myself to check this is real).

If I am honest I am also a bit daunted. I've attended 'open studios' for a number of years and it is one of those things that I have aspired to do. But, having a very small home has stopped me thinking about this seriously - a 'one day' dream when I have the perfect studio space (rather than just a kitchen table), so to be offered this opportunity now is just fantastic.

Bucks Open Studios (BOS) runs from the 9 - 24 June 2012

To find out who is exhibiting at Emerald Framing and Gallery you can click on the link or the banner image below. From here you can navigate and get a full listing of artists taking part across Buckinghamshire:

I'll keep you posted on the progress I'm making on getting ready for this exhibition!
